5 Brown Girl Friendly Blushes

Through all of my years as a makeup lover, there is only one product that I would consider my white whale…blush!  Oh, it’s so hard to find blushes that work on dark skin (brown girl friendly blushes), let alone from the drugstore. I have been disappointed time and time again to the point that I stopped trying to find drugstore blushes altogether. I figured it was one of those items that I would have to pay more for.  Which if I’m being completely honest sucks!

But I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet! One of the major problems with blush for some reason is that drugstore priced blushed always look dry, chalky and dusty/ashy on dark skin.  I think it has to do with a lot of formulas having talc as one of the first ingredients. Talc serves it’s purpose in cosmetics and sometimes that purpose is to bulk up cheap products to make it look like you’re getting something that you’re not.

Over the years beauty brands have slowly started to come around. These formulas have a great color payoff and blend beautifully. Check out my picks for Brown Girl friendly blushes and see for yourself.

Maybelline Fit Me Blush

I’ll be honest, I overlooked this blush for a long time. It just never looked very pigmented to me.  This blush really is on the sheer side. However, the color is very buildable which is a very good thing for the color shy.

E.L.F. Blush Palette, Dark

I’m convinced that is blush palette is bottomless!  I’ve had it for two years and have yet to hit pan on any of the shades. What I love the most about this palette is how versatile it is.  Every shade works on dark complexions. They have two warm and two cooler shades to really round out any makeup collection.

Milani Baked Blush, Rose D’Oro

In my last blog post, I talked about my love for this blush (that I picked up by accident). I was looking for a new highlighter and picked up the Corralina shade.  That’s when I discovered how much I love a little bit of glow in my blush. I especially love the Rose D’Oro shade.  It’s hard to describe, but it warms up my complexion in the most beautiful way.

Note Luminous Silk Blush, Desert Rose

I got this blush from a BoxyCharm sometime this summer.  When I saw pictures of it online, I was more than a little disappointed.  I figured that it was another dusty pinky nude shade that some company was trying to get rid of.  I was wrong…so wrong! The texture really is like silk. I only have to dip my brush in the pan once or twice for some great color. The shade really surprised me.  I figured it would look ashy and orange.  It has more of a warm almost coral look to it.  I highly recommend this for any brown girls collection!

Sleek Blush, Sugar

This brand showed me what a quality drugstore blush could be. that doesn’t look ashy on dark skin is in fact possible.  The blush comes in a 3 pan palette with enough shades to compliment any look.

Juvia’s Place Cosmetics is having a serious moment right now!  If you haven’t heard of this black owned company, consider this your introduction!  I recently picked up the Juvia’s Place Zulu Palette during one of their sales. Juvia’s Place has turned the world of highly pigmented eye shadow palettes on its head!  Once you had to pay ridiculous amounts of money to even come close to decent eye shadow pigmentation.  And then you still had to prime your lids like crazy just to see some color payoff, especially if you are darker skinned. This palette changed all of that! The Afro-Centric packaging is some of the most stunning that I have ever seen in my entire life.  I’m not even exaggerating!  Keep reading to see for yourself!

I’ll be honest. Rimmel has never been on my radar. They don’t strike me as the most “inclusive” of makeup brands. But since I can’t help to browse down every single makeup aisle at Walmart, I say they have some dark shades that just might work for me.

How to repourpose (seemingly) useless makeup

I am a huge fan of beauty boxes! They are a great way to beef up your collection for a modest investment. Depending on what box service you choose, the value can be incredible!

Subscription boxes have a down side though. I was with Ipsy for almost a year before it dawned on me that I was seeing the same items over and over again, in a different makeup bag. Whats worse, no matter how many times I updated my profile, the colors they chose for me rarely seemed to work. That meant I was stuck with tons of pinky-mauve liquid lipsticks that I would never use.

One solution is to join BST (buy/sell/trade) makeup groups and swap or sell you unwanted items. If that’s not something you’re interested in, then re-purposing may be the way to go!

Liquid lipsticks make awesome blushes!

I have super oily skin, but I have always loved the look of cream blushes. They always look so natural and gave off the healthiest flush, unless you have oily skin. Then you end up looking overly slick and greasy.

In my August Boxycharm, I received a #grlpwr liquid lipstick in the color Date Night. This was yet another pinky-mauvy nude color that was all the rage this year. It’s a gorgeous shade and the kind of color brown girls like me can “make work” by adding a darker lip liner. But I’m never really in the mood to manipulate lip colors, so they end up collecting dust in a drawer someplace.

One day I was playing around and swatching some of my lip colors when I thought this color would make an awesome blush color, and I was right! It dries super fast so I dabbed it on the apples of my cheeks and voila! Perfect flush of color!

Useless Mascara

I know what you’re thinking! How can mascara possibly be useless. Well, it all depends on the formula, the brush and the color. I’ve received mascaras that hardly showed up no matter how many layers I pop on.

One easy fix is to use a small eyeliner brush and, well, use it as an eyeliner! Problem solved.

Sheet Masks a plenty!

I’m starting to collect a small country’s worth of sheet masks from all of my subscription boxes. I get it! They’re small, light, easy to ship and have a big moment right now. But if you’re anything like me, sitting still with one of these slimy masks on for 20 minutes can feel like an eternity!

The best solution I’ve come up with is to snip off the corner of the mask packet and squeeze the contents into a little pot or jar with a lid! Now you have your own little pot of essence without the downtime.

Multiple items that you literally have no earthly use for

Sometimes there is no easy fix. Sometimes you end up with a basket full of sample sized products that you may never touch. There was one point with Ipsy where I was getting dry shampoo month after month. I’m a black women with natural hair, what am I going to do with dry shampoo???

A great use for mini products is to either donate them, do an Instagram or YouTube giveaway, or even sell them in lots on Ebay!

What is your favorite way to repurpose makeup??

Wet n Wild has the 1st Gel Lipliners?

I stumbled across these babies in Walmart while I was picking up more Black Radiance lipsticks that were in sale. Honestly I didn’t know gel lip liners weren’t already a thing! But according to the package, Wet n Wild has the first gel lip liner!

They come in 6 shades and retail for $2.99 each! I picked up 3 shades, Red the Scene, Gone Burgundy and Plum Together.

The liners are retractable and the texture of these are so smooth and creamy! They don’t skip or drag at all.

I can’t wait to pick up the more colors!

What is your favorite budget lip liner??

WUNDERBROW Now at CVS!!!

I’ve been on the fence about tying Instagram hyped products like Wunderbrow! It’s not because I thought it wouldn’t work, but because I hate ordering hyped products online. Because returning products bought online is such a hassle, I end up just keeping them.

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon Wunderbow just sitting on a CVS end cap!! I see you CVS!!

And because they have such a generous return policy… and because I spend way too much time there, it makes returns a breeze!

I plan to test this out over the weekend and give a full review!

Does your CVS carry Wunderbrow???
